KUALA TERENGGANU, March 6 (Bernama) — Over 5,000 Malaysians die yearly of lifestyle diseases like diabetes, heart, lung or kidney failure, said Health Ministry Parliamentary Secretary Datuk Lee Kah Choon.
He said that the ministry’s statistics also showed that annually some 120,000 Malaysians were afflicted by such diseases, which were mainly caused because of adopting unheallthy lifestyles like excessive sugar, fat and salt intake, lack of exercise and also due to smoking and consuming alcohol in large amounts.
“These numbers are only of patients getting treatment at government hospitals and do not include that in private hospitals or cases unreported. This is definitely not good and concerted efforts need to be made to check it,” he told reporters after launching a healthy lifestyle campaign at the Mydin Hypermarket here Tuesday.
The one-day campaign organised by the Lions Club, Kelab Anak Malaysia and Gerakan with the cooperation of the Mydin Hypermarket was also attended by the superstore’s managing director, Datuk Ameer Mydin.
